UVC Lamps Help Hospitals with Effective Sterilization

December 03, 2021 by John Andros in uv light on kitchens, light bulb manufacturers

Hospitals provide critical care to people with serious illness whether emergency treatment, diagnostic services, or ongoing care for chronic illness.  Due to the nature of the typical patient, hospitals must be vigilant in sterilizing surfaces and protecting patients from infection.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that on any given day an estimated one out of every 31 patients in the U.S. contract a Healthcare Acquired Infection (HAI) from their stay in a hospital.

Patients who enter a room following a patient that had an infection such as the influenza virus and even drug resistant superbugs like MRSA run a high risk of contracting an HAI.

UV Lamps in HVAC and Air Purification Systems

Many illnesses can be transmitted through airborne particles such as tuberculosis and many influenza viruses.  UVC lamps in air purification systems play an important role in sterilizing the air making it healthier for patients and staff.  UV lamps can be installed in upper room UVGI (ultraviolet germicidal irradiation) systems or directly into HVAC systems for automatic purification.  Some systems can be designed to come on when a patient leaves the restroom, for example, while others are always working behind the scenes in furnaces and AC units.

UVC Germicidal Lamps for Surface Sterilization

UVC lamps provide highly effective sterilization in air, water, and surface sterilization systems.  There are many ways to reap the benefits of surface sterilization with systems like UVC robots and UVC lamps that directly disinfect critical areas like surgical rooms.  UVC lamps are also used to disinfect and keep surgical equipment clean.  UVC robots are being deployed in hospitals as well as other public places to work autonomously with high rates of efficacy.

Are UVC Robots Effective in Killing the SARS CoV-2 Virus?

April 20, 2021 by John Andros in light bulb manufacturers

One full year into the COVID-19 pandemic and we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, with widespread vaccinations and people everywhere doing what they can to reduce the spread of infection. With several studies documenting the effectiveness of UVC germicidal lamps to kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, businesses are taking notice and investing in UV disinfection systems to protect their staff and the public. In addition to typical UV light water, surface and air sterilization systems, UVC robots are in high demand.

Many hospitals across the country have invested in UV light robots to provide an added layer of protection against spreading disease. In spite of the most meticulous manual cleaning regimen, hospital staff can be pushed to the limit and operating with limited personal protective equipment. A UVC robot can be programmed to enter a hospital room after a manual cleaning process, and effectively kill bacteria and viruses often time missed even with the most diligent attempt at disinfection. UVC robots aid weary hospital staff without being on the payroll or needing a break, they simply make their way back to the charging station when required and deliver powerful germ killing UVC light to eliminate viruses and bacteria.

UVC Robots Proven Effective

Several studies have now been conducted which verify the effectiveness of UVC germicidal lamps to kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is a member of the beta coronavirus family similar to MERS and SARS.  Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) are in the same coronavirus family and have been known to be effectively eliminated by UVC radiation.  UVC light effectively inactivates these viruses as shown in a recent study by PURPLESUN which shows dosage and exposure time required to inactivate various types of coronaviruses as well as exposure time required to effectively kill drug-resistant bacteria.

Not only will UVC robots help hospitals to prevent the spread of COVID-19, they also continue to reduce risk of common health care associated infections (HAIs) from superbugs often found in hospitals. With UV light sterilization gaining in popularity, UVC robots are now seen outside of the medical field in places such as airports, train stations, shopping malls and public shelters.

UV Light Prevents Grease Build Up in Kitchen Exhaust

January 30, 2021 by John Andros in light bulb manufacturers

Kitchen hood exhaust systems in commercial kitchens serve a very important purpose, to pull grease particles up and away through mechanical filters.  Kitchen exhaust systems vent excess heat above kitchen stoves and extract grease particles, leaving smaller particulates that may linger in the hood exhaust system.  These kitchen exhaust systems can encounter grease build-up in the vents if they are not cleaned regularly or treated with UV light sterilization solutions.

How Does UV Light Help Kitchen Hood Exhausts?

Ultraviolet (UV) light emits UV radiation, electromagnetic energy, and is harnessed in UV germicidal lamps used in a vast range of applications.  UV light is used to purify the air, disinfect water and sterilize surfaces.  Utilizing UV light in kitchen hood exhaust systems provides many benefits beyond sterilization.  Kitchen hood UV exhaust systems can actually prevent grease build-up in the exhaust duct work.

UVC lamps break down grease through photolysis and ozonolysis. UV light causes a photochemical reaction, breaking down the molecular bond while ozonolysis oxidizes the grease molecules. By breaking down the grease particles, they are converted into particles that are much easier to clean and do not build-up grease in the kitchen hood.

This brings many benefits to restaurant owners by mitigating the risk of a grease fire, which can often occur with grease build-up in the exhaust hood.  UV kitchen exhaust systems also help kitchens to meet stringent health department code regulations by helping to keep the kitchen cleaner.  This provides a better work environment for employees and helps to maintain health standards for patrons.

UV Lamps are Key to Successful UV Sterilization Systems

Using the right UV lamps for your UV kitchen exhaust sterilization system is key to successful prevention of grease build-up and sterilization.  UV germicidal lamps designed to emit 254 nanometer (nm) are effective in sterilizing air and surfaces.  Ozone producing lamps emit UV energy at 185 nm and are commonly used in air and water disinfection applications, deodorizing the air and reaching places that standard UV radiation cannot reach.

When searching for the best UV lamps for your sterilization application, contact an experienced UV lamp manufacturer like LightSources.

LightSources leads the industry in UVC germicidal lamp production, with a wide range of low-pressure, amalgam and many other lamp types designed with proprietary technology.  We provide high-quality UVC lamps proven to outlast and outperform comparable lamps of the same size.  Contact us to learn more and for custom lamp requirements for your UV germicidal application.
