August 30, 2024 by John Andros in UVC GERMICIDAL LAMPS

Originally posted at: https://www.light-sources.com/blog/how-effective-is-uv-light-to-kill-germs/

The effectiveness of UV light to kill germs is proven in many germicidal applications such as air purification systems and water disinfection applications. UV light also kills germs on surfaces and is used in many applications such as food buffets and grocery stores. UV germicidal lamps harness the power of UV radiation, which destroys bacteria, viruses, and many germs naked to the human eye, instantly upon contact.

Ultraviolet radiation is emitted in wavelengths and measured with nanometers (nm), with UV light broken down into 3 basic categories, UVA, UVB, and UVC radiation. UVA light is measured between 315 nm and 400 nm, UVB light is found in the range of 280 nm to 315 nm, while UVC radiation is between 200 nm to 280 nm with these powerful shorter wavelengths proven to have an extremely effective germicidal function specifically at 254 nm.

Use UV Light to Kill Germs at 254 nm

UVC radiation is emitted in the range of 254 nm is proven to eliminate viruses, bacteria, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and harmful microorganisms. UVC radiation at 254 nm instantly penetrates the cells of these living organisms and alters the DNA to render it unable to replicate which leaves them completely harmless. Short-wave UVC radiation does not reach the surface of the Earth as it is filtered out by the Earth’s atmosphere. This wavelength of UV light to kill germs is extremely effective and is harmless to people.

Use UV Light to Kill Airborne Germs with Ozone at 185 nm

UVC radiation emitted at the short wave of 185 nm is useful in ozone-producing germicidal lamps to eliminate odors from the air. Ozone-generating germicidal lamps are used in air purification systems worldwide to keep air smelling crisp and clean and free from foul and stale odors. Air purification systems with ozone lamps eliminate VOCs such as ammonia, mercaptans, and sulfides. Ozone-generating lamps decompress oxygen, O² to produce ozone, O³ which is a proven oxidizer.

Using UV Light to Kill Germs Provides Many Benefits

Using UV light to kill germs provides many benefits over other methods of disinfection. Many environmental regulations and codes exist to control the use of chemical disinfection and byproducts. UVC germicidal lamps are completely free from any harmful byproducts, meeting strict regulations and environmental codes.

Companies utilize UV air purification systems to provide a safe work environment and control potentially dangerous emissions to meet environment code compliance. UV germicidal lamps are used in water disinfection systems such as municipalities’ water treatment systems, fish aquariums, hatcheries, ballast water treatment systems, and many other water cleansing applications. UV light even kills some bacteria and viruses that chlorine does not, such as cryptosporidium and giardia.

UV light disinfection provides effective germ-killing properties, code compliance with strict environmental regulations, and is completely safe with no harmful byproducts. High-performance, high-quality germicidal lamps also provide long-lasting performance which requires little to no maintenance. With UV light germ-killing systems there is no need to purchase, store, or dispose of chemicals, providing maintenance-free disinfection systems which provide cost savings.

To summarize, UV disinfection provides the following benefits over other methods:

  • Meets code compliance and environmental regulations

  • Is completely safe with no harmful byproducts

  • No need to maintain chemicals

  • Long-lasting lamps require little to no maintenance

  • Provides instant, effective disinfection

  • Provides cost savings with long-lasting quality UVC germicidal lamps

With all of these benefits, it is easy to see why UV light is the preferred germ-killing disinfection process for many applications. Working with a reputable UVC germicidal lamp provider will deliver the best results with the right lamp for your process.

Benefits of UV Air Purifier for HVAC Systems

July 31, 2024 by John Andros in Germicidal Lamps

Originally posted at: https://www.light-sources.com/blog/benefits-of-uv-air-purifier-for-hvac-systems/

UV air purifier for HVAC systems provides many health benefits by keeping air clean, disinfected, and free from irritants, pollutants, and germs. UV air purification systems used in HVAC and AC units provide significant health benefits to people in many environments such as public buildings, hospitals, nursing homes and doctor facilities. UV air purifiers are becoming popular in residential homes as well as many people realize the benefits of cleansing the air we breathe and removing contaminants.

UV air purifiers are proven to effectively eliminate bacteria, viruses, germs, mildew, mold and even dust from the air. Breathing clean air free from these contaminants improves health and wellness in all people and is critical for people with compromised immune systems, asthma or respiratory illnesses. Eradicating these contaminants from the air provides a healthier environment and promotes continued health and wellness.

Effectiveness of UV Air Purifier for HVAC

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is emitted in various wavelengths measured in nanometers (nm). UV light emitted specifically at 254 nm is proven to be extremely effective at killing germs, viruses and all types of bacteria. This optimum output of germ killing UV wavelength does not emit ozone, which is produced when UV radiation is in the range of 185 nm. Ozone is a proven deodorizer, removing foul odors from the air. Consult with a UV HVAC professional regarding ozone generating lamps as they may cause corrosion to copper lines in some AC units.

Properly Install UV Air Purifier in HVAC Systems

Proper installation of UV lamps in air purifier HVAC systems is important for maximum effectiveness. UV air purifier systems should be mounted on the cold air side near the cooling coil or downstream. The output should be targeted toward the cooling coil and the draining pan for condensation underneath the coils to prevent the growth of algae or mold spores. Improper installation would not be effective in eliminating germs as bacteria and mold could develop and contaminate the blower which would contaminate the entire living space. Growth of algae or mold could also clog the coils of an AC unit and cause the motor to overwork and burn out quicker than if those contaminants were eliminated. Eliminating these germs and harmful contaminants through your HVAC unit provides clean and disinfected air for improved health and wellness as well as prolonging the life of your valuable HVAC and AC equipment.

Benefits of HVAC UV Air Purification Systems

HVAC UV air purification systems provide many benefits in commercial and residential settings. Business owners realize the benefits of providing clean and healthy air to employees which improves attendance and cuts down on workplace illnesses. Daycare centers and schools help to prevent the spread of airborne illnesses among students and hospitals provide a safer environment for sick patients. Clean and healthy air is vital to all people in all environments including commercial, industrial and residential settings.

UV air purifiers in industrial settings help manufacturers to maintain a healthy work environment while meeting air emission regulations. UV air purification is proven to remove toxic chemicals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air produced by industrial operations. UV air purification is becoming more popular in residential HVAC systems, providing cleaner air in homes which benefits all residents especially people that are sick or have a compromised immune system. UV air purification provides all of these benefits as well as prolonging the life of your equipment by eliminating mold, mildew and harmful contaminants.

UV Light Air Conditioner Benefits

December 27, 2023 by John Andros in Air Sterilization Systems

Weighing the cost against the benefits, it is difficult to find a downside to installing a UV light air conditioner purification system in any commercial, industrial, municipal, medical, or residential building. UV germicidal light, specifically at the frequency of 253.7 nanometers (commonly referred to as 254 nm), effectively eliminates a host of pernicious microorganisms, such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, molds, spores, parasites, and dust mites.

The result is, at the very minimum, cleaner air for residents, employees, visitors, and others throughout the structure serviced by the air conditioner. In addition, UV germicidal lamps prevent build up on equipment which prolongs the useful life of air conditioning systems and enhances efficient operation.

UV Light AC System Proven to Reduce Fungi

UV light air conditioner purification systems provide many benefits and efficiencies. UV radiation is extremely effective at eliminating harmful pathogens that can collect on air conditioner units and spread through circulated air. In a recent scientific study evaluating the effectiveness of UV radiation to eliminate fungi in air handling units, a 286,000-square-foot office building in Oklahoma was equipped with a UV system on the main air handling units of two floors while two other floors had no lamps installed. Readings were taken from the study floor and the control floor to detect the concentration levels of mold and fungi since installation.

More than a dozen fungi species were present in May prior to installation of the UV system. When taken again in September, the readings on the floor with the UV system had decreased, while nearly every taxon increased its concentration on the control floor, in a couple of instances nearly 100-fold.

Health Benefits of UV Light for Air Conditioning Systems

UV lights in air handling units and air conditioner systems remove harmful pathogens from the units and from circulated air which provides significant health benefits. Some of the symptoms and ailments alleviated by the purified air include common colds; eye, nose, and throat irritation; allergies; headaches; nausea; COPD; bronchitis; asthma; lung infections; pulmonary disease; autoimmune deficiencies; and cancer.

The positive ripple effects of installing a UV air sterilization system are legion, and many of the benefits are long-term:

  • Freeing a workplace from airborne germs, pollutants, and irritants makes for a healthier workforce, and consequently decreases absenteeism and increases productivity.

  • UV purification systems have been proven to remove many industry-specific toxic chemicals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced during business operations.

  • At 254 nm, the UV light produces no ozone, which can erode copper wiring and tubing. UVC ozone lamps are available that with proper installation, provide air sterilization and odor control.

  • UV light prohibits the accumulation of microorganisms, mold, and mildew that can clog the passageways of an AC system, making the motor work harder and shortening the useful life of the mechanics.

  • With the destruction of mold and mildew, their associated odors are eliminated.

  • The UV germicidal light system lowers energy costs by continuously cleaning the air conditioner components of mold and biofilms, particularly the coils, drain pans, and vent surfaces.

  • UV light systems are extremely low maintenance, saving time and money.

  • UV systems can work at optimum efficiency throughout a wide range of temperatures, from roughly 40°to 120° F (4° to 48° C). LightSources can custom-design systems to work in higher temperatures as required.

LightSources provides only the highest quality germicidal UVC lamps, proven to outlast and outperform comparable lamps. The experts at LightSources can help design the most effective and most economical UV lamps for air purification systems for use in any business, government facility, home, or other building.

185nm UV Lamp for Ozone Disinfection

December 25, 2023 by John Andros in Germicidal Lamps

A 185nm UV Lamp generates ultraviolet energy at 185nm which is proven to effectively produce ozone, a natural sanitizer and deodorizer. A 185 nm UV light produces UV energy in wavelengths shorter than 220 nm which decompresses oxygen, O², to produce ozone, O³. UV germicidal lamps are designed to emit the most effective wavelength of UV radiation, measured in nanometers (nm). 185 nm lamps produce ozone, while 254 nm is an optimal wavelength to target the DNA of viruses, fungi and bacteria.

Ultraviolet radiation is proven to instantly penetrate the cells of harmful, disease causing microorganisms and rearrange the genetic material to render the cell unable to replicate. These harmful germs including protozoa and algae are unable to reproduce and are considered dead. UV germicidal lamps are proven to be highly effective in many surface, air and water disinfection applications with 185 nm ozone lamps providing many benefits.

Low Pressure and Medium Pressure Germicidal Lamps

The two main types of UV germicidal lamps are low pressure and medium pressure Mercury discharge lamps. Some low pressure germicidal lamps will look very similar to typical fluorescent lamps although the glass tube does not contain a fluorescent phosphor. The glass is also made of either soda lime glass or fused quartz as opposed to an ordinary borosilicate glass in typical fluorescent lamps.

This is to allow the optimum wavelength produced by a Mercury arc of either 185nm or 254nm of UV light to pass through unmodified. Low-pressure Mercury discharge lamps will still produce a visible light due to Mercury radiation bands.

Medium pressure Mercury discharge lamps look very similar to a high intensity discharge (HID) lamps and produce a broadband of UVC radiation rather than a single, narrow band line. These broadband UVC germicidal lamps produce a bright bluish white light and are common in many industrial water treatment applications due to the intense radiation source.

Low Pressure Amalgam UV Lamps

Low pressure Amalgam UV lamps provide stable performance over a wide range of ambient temperature changes with 3 to 4 times higher power density. Amalgam lamps are preferred for long-term applications and are available with either spot or pellet Amalgam technology. Spot Amalgam technology uses Mercury Amalgam applied to the inner surface of the lamp, whereas pellet Amalgam technology has Mercury Amalgam on the outside of the lamp arc.

Amalgam lamps provide some benefits over other lamps with the vapor pressure controlled by location and composition of Amalgam and allow for higher lamp current operation with robust filaments.

Low Pressure Amalgam Lamps

Ozone Producing 185 nm UV Lamp Benefits

Ozone Air Purification – Ozone Carries Through the Air

Ozone producing 185 nm UV lamps offer additional benefits and are required to oxidize specific organic compounds. One of the major advantages of ozone disinfection lamps is that ozone is carried through the air to places where UV radiation does not directly reach. 185 nm UV light is used in many UV air purification systems to effectively sanitize and clean the air in many HVAC systems.

Ozone Water Purification – Stronger than Chlorination

185 nm lamps are also very common in many water sterilization applications. Ozone is proven to be very effective over a wide range of pH environments and reacts quickly with viruses, bacteria and protozoans. Ozone provides a very strong oxidizing power and a short reaction time, with stronger germicidal properties then chlorination in many applications. Ozone does not add harmful chemicals to the water and eliminates many protozoans the chlorine does not such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium.

Ozone Oxidation – Powerful Water Disinfection

Also provides excellent oxidation in disinfection properties which makes it popular in drinking water treatment systems. 185 nm lamps are convenient in that ozone may be added to water treatment systems at several points such as during pre-oxidation, intermediate and final disinfection treatment processes. Ozone water disinfection is used worldwide in many applications including ballast water treatment systems for ships which are globally enforced to protect the planet’s oceans.

185nm UV Lamps from LightSources

LightSources and LightTech offer 185nm UV lamps manufactured with high-quality quartz glass. The type of fused quartz used to make the envelope, or the bulb, of the germicidal lamp determines the wavelength of UV emissions. Ozone is an extremely effective deodorizer and active oxidizer, destroying microorganisms on contact. The LightSources Group offers Very High (VH) UV germicidal lamps which produce UV energy at 185nm as well as Low (L) lamps which produce 254nm.

Our L lamps are designed with a specially doped fused quartz to prohibit the emission of 185 nm, while our VH lamps are designed with clear fused quartz to allow the emission of energy at 185 nm. These 185 nm UV lights are found in a wide range of air treatment systems and water sterilization applications. VH lamps are effective in reducing total organic compounds (TOCs) and are commonly used in HVAC UV air purification systems.

LightSources and LightTech offer UV germicidal lamp solutions for any application, with a wide range of patented, high-tech lamp products as well as custom designed solutions available. We design, engineer and manufacture lamps with two types of quartz spliced together to produce specific amounts of ozone. Our ozone disinfection lamps provide many benefits including:

Where are UV Light Bulbs Used?

November 25, 2022 by John Andros in UV Light

Ultraviolet (UV) light bulbs are used in many industries and applications, providing such a broad range of solutions to so many environments it is difficult to list them all. UV light is not visible to the human eye, scientists and lighting engineers replicate the shortwave electromagnetic radiation when manufacturing UV lamps. Custom phosphor blends and lamp design and engineering provide visibility of the UV radiation, which is typically not detectable by the human eye.

UV light, when emitted by the sun, is typically categorized into three areas, UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVC is the shortest wavelength and is completely absorbed by the ozone layer, never reaching the surface of the earth. UVC light is also known to possess highly effective germicidal properties to sterilize surfaces, water, and the air.  UVA and UVB lamps are also used for a wide range of purposes, with ultraviolet light bulbs providing a healthier and safer environment for the human race in many ways.

Common UV Light Bulb Applications

Some of the most common applications where UV lamps are utilized include:

UV curing - ultraviolet light is known to quickly cure certain coatings, glazes, adhesives, lacquers, and varnishes in an instant, providing a durable and smooth surface. This speeds up industrial processes in many industries and creates higher-quality products with quick curing, less evaporation, and less contamination.

UV germicidal - ultraviolet light emitted in the short wave range of UVC is known to provide very effective germicidal properties and can eliminate viruses, bacteria, and harmful microorganisms in a matter of seconds. UVC germicidal lamps are used in air purification systems, water, and surface sterilization systems, and many environments such as schools, laboratories, hospitals, and many commercial and residential environments. Germicidal UVC lamps are known to eliminate superbugs that are resistant to antibiotics and are also effective against beta coronaviruses, including MERS, SARS, and SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19.

Phototherapy - UV lamps bring healing to patients suffering from many conditions, offering hope and effective treatment to people suffering from many skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, and acne. UV light bulbs also provide healing to people with mood disorders and depression and are used to treat babies born with neonatal jaundice.

Tanning - UV light tubes used for tanning are one of the most commonly recognized UV lamps in service. UV tanning lamps are quite different from phototherapy and germicidal lamps, and not all UV lamps are created equal.

It is important to source your UV lamps from a reputable UV lamp manufacturer.

Where Is UV Light on the Electromagnetic Spectrum?

November 23, 2022 by John Andros in UV Light

Electromagnetic energy travels in waves and covers a very wide spectrum from short gamma rays to long radio waves, with x-rays, visible light, and UV light in between. Only a small portion of this electromagnetic spectrum is visible light that the human eye can detect. An x-ray machine detects a different portion of the spectrum, and a radio detects yet another portion of this spectrum.

People use electromagnetic energy every day, when they send a text message, watch television, listen to the radio, or use a microwave oven. The world as we know it would not exist without electromagnetic energy.

UV Light and Visible Light

Ultraviolet (UV) light is actually not visible to the human eye, with shorter wavelengths than visible light. Visible light can be seen at wavelengths measuring from about 400 to 700 nm, with 400 nm light being purple or violet in color. UV light is emitted in shorter wavelengths in the range of 100 to 400 nm, closest to the violet color on the visible spectrum, thus is coined beyond violet, or ultraviolet.

UVA, UVB, & UVC

Ultraviolet radiation has many practical uses and provides many benefits to industries and applications to help the human race.  Ultraviolet light is further broken down into three categories, UVA, UVB, and UVC light.  UVC is the shortest wavelength and, when emitted from the sun, is completely absorbed by the ozone layer, although it is proven to provide powerful germicidal properties.

Scientists and lighting engineers replicate UVC radiation when manufacturing UVC bulbs that provide powerful germicidal properties in many environments, including air disinfection, surface, and water sterilization. UVB lamps are commonly used in many medical phototherapy applications, bringing relief to a wide range of people suffering from skin disorders, acne, psoriasis, and eczema, and also helping people with mood disorders and depression. UVA lamps are also useful in medical phototherapy applications and are also the commonly known black light. Black lights do much more than illuminate psychedelic posters, they help crime scene investigators identify organic material and bodily fluids and help prevent fraud with currency validation.

No matter what type of UV light bulbs you require, working with a reputable UV lamp manufacturer is the best way to ensure quality lamps, as not all UV lamps are created equal.

LightSources is recognized as a leading global supplier of UV light bulbs with a wide selection of standard shapes and sizes and custom options available, including UV light tubes, U-shaped lamps, and custom designs. UV Disinfection Lamps in HVAC Systems

October 31, 2022 by John Andros in UV disinfection Lamps

Ultraviolet (UV) lamps designed to emit UVC radiation have long been used for effective disinfection and sterilization purposes. Lighting engineers re-create UVC light which is naked to the human eye, and the shortest wave of UV light that is fully absorbed by the ozone layer. UVC radiation packs powerful germ-killing properties and quickly kills a variety of viruses, bacteria, and microorganisms within seconds of contact.

UVC lights have been used in many disinfection applications for decades, such as air purification systems, water disinfection systems, and surface sterilization applications.

Benefits of UVC Lamps in Air Purification Systems

UVC lamps in air purification systems prevent many airborne diseases by purifying the air and cleansing air from harmful contaminants while circulating and exposed to UVC lamps. UV lamps in HVAC systems are becoming more popular as many people realize the benefits of removing harmful contaminants from the air and preventing airborne disease.

Germicidal UV lamps in HVAC units provide additional benefits of protecting equipment and air condenser coils against the formation and buildup of mold and mildew. UVC lamps are known to prevent mold and mildew, which helps equipment to run smoother, more efficiently, and last longer.

How UVC Lamps Kill Airborne Viruses

UVC radiation quickly penetrates the DNA of harmful cells, altering the genetic makeup of these microorganisms, which renders them unable to reproduce. Cells that cannot reproduce are rendered harmless without the needed proteins to replicate or survive. Many studies show high efficacy with germ-killing properties of UVC germicidal lamps in air purification and HVAC systems.

UVC lamps should only be installed by a professional in HVAC systems as exposure to UVC radiation can be harmful to human eyes and skin.

LightSources and valued partner LightTech are leading UV lamp global suppliers offering high-quality, high-tech germicidal lamps designed to meet specific disinfection requirements. We offer custom design and development with custom phosphor blends, prototype development, and OEM-oriented solutions. UVB Phototherapy Lamps for Vitiligo

September 05, 2022 by John Andros in UV Germicidal Lamp

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder which causes white patches to appear on the skin due to a progressive loss of melanocytes, melanin forming cells. These colorless patches on the skin have distinct margins, are non-scaly, and typically will get larger over time. They may also appear inside of the nose and mouth, and loss of color can also affect hair and facial hair.

UVB Lamps for Vitiligo Provide Successful Treatment

Ultraviolet, UV lamps designed to emit narrow band UVB give patients hope for a positive prognosis when properly administered. UVB lamps for vitiligo are considered safe under the proper direction and are typically administered in the office of a dermatologist. Ultraviolet lamps are most effective at restoring skin pigmentation on patients with vitiligo on the neck and face; white patches on fingertips, toes, and the lips are less responsive to UVB phototherapy.

Narrowband UVB Proven Effective Treatment for Vitiligo

Narrowband UVB lamps were shown to provide nearly 75% repigmentation on 63% of patients receiving phototherapy for vitiligo twice per week over the course of one year in this study published by the National Library of medicine. Narrowband UVB lamps were shown to be more effective than another popular treatment with UVA lamps and Psoralen medication, referred to as PUVA. Patients should speak with their doctor to determine the best course of action for their type of vitiligo.

What Conditions Do Medical Phototherapy Lamps Treat?

August 29, 2022 by John Andros in UV Lamps

Ultraviolet light has many useful purposes, with UV electromagnetic radiation providing germicidal and healing properties.  Medical phototherapy is the process of using various wavelengths of UV light to treat certain conditions. UV phototherapy lamps are useful in treating and providing relief to a variety of ailments and illnesses.

Phototherapy lamps are proven to treat many health conditions, including:

Neonatal jaundice - UV lamps are the main source of treatment to break down bilirubin in the blood that occurs when an infant’s liver is not yet fully capable of breaking down the toxins in the body.  “Bili” lights help the baby’s body and prevent brain damage.

Mood disorders, depression – many people experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) during the winter months with less sunlight. Light therapy lamps help to treat depression which can be mild to severe and can improve symptoms of fatigue, lack of interest, and many other depressive symptoms.

Sleep disorders – phototherapy lamps treat sleep disorders, including jet lag, by helping the body to regulate the natural circadian rhythm.

Light therapy lamps also treat a host of skin conditions and are prescribed by dermatologists to ensure the right wavelength is used to treat specific conditions such as:

Acne – UV light is proven to help treat acne, which affects nearly 60 million people in the U.S. Topical treatments can minimize symptoms, but many are ineffective, leaving people looking for help. Combinations of red and blue light therapy have been proven successful in treating acne to reduce outbreaks and lessen the severity of symptoms.

Eczema – UV light is useful for successfully treating eczema with UVA, UVB, and narrow-band UVB wavelengths that reduce symptoms and help to clear skin.

Psoriasis – light therapy helps to treat psoriasis by successfully lessening the severity of symptoms and preventing outbreaks.  Sometimes medication called Psoralen is used in conjunction with UVA and UVB wavelengths to help absorption for successful treatment.

Vitiligo – UV lights treat vitiligo which is a skin condition that leaves white patches on the skin due to a loss of melanin. Narrowband UVB lamps are a popular way to treat vitiligo and help repigment skin cells.

Ultraviolet medical phototherapy lights are used to treat these conditions and others, such as helping wounds to heal by increasing blood circulation and preventing infection. Photodynamic therapy, PDT, is a treatment where UV blue light is used in conjunction with medications to treat certain types of cancer and kill cancer cells or tumors of atypical growth.

How Effective is Far UVC Light at 222 nm?

July 27, 2022 by John Andros in UVC Lamps

Far UVC is ultraviolet (UV) light in the range of 207–222 nm, which are shorter wavelengths than the traditional 254 nm UVC lamps.  Interest in far UVC technology is increasing with more research and awareness of the many benefits of UVC lamps engineered to emit wavelengths in the far UVC range. Far UVC wavelengths are shown to provide the same germicidal effectiveness with many benefits such as improved safety.

Safety of Far UVC vs. Traditional 254 nm UV Lamps

Traditional 254 nm lamps emit powerful UVC radiation highly effective for germicidal applications, although cannot be used when people are present in the room. Traditional UVC sterilization systems must be operated in a closed system, with precautionary measures to shut off automatically if a person enters the room because they can damage human eyes and skin. Far UVC 222 nm lamps emit shorter wavelengths that are shown to operate safely without causing harm to human eyes and skin.

Far UVC 222 nm Lamp Effectiveness

Far UVC lamps are also shown to be highly effective at killing the same types of viruses, bacteria, and harmful pathogens as traditional UV germicidal lamps, influenza, alpha, and beta coronaviruses. One study conducted by various universities showed that far UVC technology effectively eliminated the threat of airborne bacteria, S. Aureus, while continually spraying into a room. The far UVC lamps and overhead systems eliminated 98% of airborne microbes even though they were continually spraying into the room.

This study and others like it so that the future is bright for far UVC light, with effective disinfection that can be used continually as opposed to only when people are not in the room.

LightSources is a leader in the UVC lamp industry with a wide range of traditional 254 nm UV lamps and custom design and engineering to meet specific wavelength emissions. Our UVC germicidal lamps can be found worldwide in surface, water, and air purification systems. Contact us to learn more about UVC germicidal technology including far UVC lamps.

UV Lamps in Your Furnace Disinfect the Air

December 29, 2021 by John Andros in UVC Lamps, UV Germicidal Lamp

Ultraviolet (UV) light has very distinct properties and when emitted in the short wave UVC range, it is very effective at killing germs.  UV light is emitted in different wavelengths known as UVA, UVB and UVC.  UVA and UVB reach the earth and are what causes the common sunburn, whereas UVC energy is absorbed by the ozone layer.  UV lamp engineers recreate UVC energy in powerful germ-killing lamps that quickly eliminate harmful pathogens to sterilize surfaces and the air in mere seconds.

How Do UVC Lamps Sterilize Air?

UVC lamps sterilize the air by quickly eliminating harmful germs including bacteria and viruses.  UV wavelengths are measured in nanometers (nm) and UV light at the 254 nm range is proven very effective at destroying germs. UVC electromagnetic energy penetrates the DNA of these cells and renders them unable to replicate.  A cell that cannot replicate is considered harmless.

UVC Lamps in Furnaces

UVC lamps are the key to disinfection in surface, water, and air purification systems.  UVC disinfection lamps can be mounted in furnaces and HVAC systems to eliminate the growth of mold or mildew inside the unit itself and to sterilize the air as it passes through the lamp’s wavelengths.  UVC germicidal lamps in furnaces help to prevent the spread of airborne disease while also improving equipment performance.  Mold and mildew tend to build up in damp, dark places like the inside of a furnace, UV lamps improve equipment performance for longer lasting use with less maintenance required.

According to this article by the National Institutes of Health, UVC lamps effectively reduce contamination of fungi in HVAC air handling systems.

UVC Lamps for Furnaces

LightSources offers germicidal UVC lamps for air purification when installed in furnaces and HVAC systems.  UVC germicidal lamps designed to emit 185 nm produce ozone, another type of disinfection lamp that can travel in the air with an oxidative effect to eliminate foul odors. UV lamps should be installed by a professional for furnace and HVAC disinfection.

LightSources offers UVC germicidal lamp solutions to OEMs of all sizes.  We provide a wide selection of high-tech, high-quality germicidal lamps and offer custom designed solutions to meet the specifications of your air purification system.  Contact us to speak with an engineer about UV lamps for furnace disinfection applications.

Why Restaurants Use UV Lights in Kitchen Hood Exhausts

August 30, 2021 by John Andros in light bulb manufacturers

Ultraviolet (UV) light is electromagnetic energy emitted in various wavelengths, UVA, UVB and short wave UVC radiation.  UVC wavelengths in the range of 254 nanometer (nm) are proven to be highly effective and eliminating harmful microorganisms providing powerful germicidal effects.  But did you know that UVC lamps deliver many more benefits to restaurants and commercial kitchens by protecting kitchen equipment as well as sterilizing air and surfaces?

UVC Lamps Protect Kitchen Equipment

Restaurant owners everywhere are wondering how to improve their facilities to provide a cleaner, more sterile environment. UVC lamps are providing the answer with many air purification and surface sterilization systems featuring UVC light.  UVC lamps eliminate the threat of viruses and bacteria such as Salmonella and E. Coli on surfaces and also eradicate airborne pathogens when installed correctly in air purification or HVAC systems. UV radiation has other interesting properties by breaking down grease particles and preventing grease buildup on commercial kitchens and exhaust hoods.

How Does UV Light Prevent Grease Buildup

UVC lamps help to prevent the buildup of grease on kitchen exhaust equipment through a two-part process known as photolysis and ozonolysis. During photolysis, UV radiation alters the molecular bond of grease and ozonolysis oxidizes the grease molecules. This prevents heavy duty grease build up that occurs in kitchen hood exhaust fans, making kitchen fans much more efficient, cleaner, and easier to maintain.

Germicidal UV lamps prolong equipment life and mitigate the risk of fire by preventing grease buildup in kitchen exhaust systems.  Restaurant owners enjoy a cleaner kitchen with less work to keep the exhaust system clean and find it easier to meet stringent health department regulations with a cleaner kitchen. This improves health standards for restaurant patrons and keeps a cleaner environment for employees.

LightSources Offers UVC Lamps for Restaurants and Kitchen UV Systems

LightSources offers germicidal UVC lamps for use in surface and air sterilization systems for restaurants, including lamps for UV kitchen hood exhaust systems. We offer a wide product line with sterilization lamps in all shapes and sizes for use in water, air, and surface sterilization systems worldwide.  Our lighting engineers offer custom engineering to meet your specific needs including prototyping designs and custom designed bases.

Does UV Light Kill Covid in Water, Surfaces, and in Air?

May 29, 2021 by John Andros in light bulb manufacturers

Ultraviolet (UV) UV light emitted specifically in the UVC range is proven to be highly effective at killing many germs including tough bacteria and viruses. UVC radiation emitted at specifically 254 nm wavelengths is the most effective to inactivate viruses and bacteria by penetrating the cells of these microorganisms and rendering them unable to replicate. UVC wavelengths emitted in the range of 207 - 222 nm is referred to as far UVC light, which is also very effective at sterilization while not quite as harmful to human skin and eyes.

UV Sterilization in Water

UVC germicidal lamps are used in many water sterilization applications such as wastewater treatment plants, pool and spa and many other water disinfection applications. Germicidal UV lamps have been proven to eliminate many harmful bacteria that even chlorine does not kill, like Cryptosporidium and Giardia. UV light is also proven to kill harmful beta coronaviruses, like Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).  The SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 is in the same beta coronavirus family as MERS and SARS and UV light is also effective at eliminating the SARS-CoV-2 virus, as shown in this recent study.

UV Light Kills SARS CoV-2 Virus on Surfaces

UVC lamps are highly effective at eliminating harmful pathogens on surfaces and are in wide use in many applications such as hospitals, schools, and laboratories. Surfaces should be clean and indirect exposure of UV radiation for maximum efficacy, which is why many hospitals follow manual cleaning procedures with a roaming UVC robot. This is an effective practice to significantly increase the safety of patients in hospital rooms and staff.

UVC Lamps Kill Covid in the Air

The SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 is known to spread the airborne particles which is one of the most common modes of transmission and infection. UVC air purification systems kill viruses and bacteria as they circulate through the air in your home or office, protecting people from airborne disease. UV lamps in HVAC and central AC units provide automatic 24/7 protection by killing viruses that pass through air handling units (AHUs) and protect your equipment by preventing the buildup of mold and fungi.

UVC germicidal lamps are highly effective at eliminating bacteria and viruses, including beta coronaviruses and the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.

LightSources, LightTech and our valuable partner companies represent the LightSources group, recognized worldwide as a leading provider of high-quality UV lamps. Our lighting engineers offer custom designed products and solutions with prototype design and development as well as custom phosphor blends to meet your specific application needs. Are UVC Robots Effective in Killing the SARS CoV-2 Virus?

April 20, 2021 by John Andros in light bulb manufacturers

One full year into the COVID-19 pandemic and we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, with widespread vaccinations and people everywhere doing what they can to reduce the spread of infection. With several studies documenting the effectiveness of UVC germicidal lamps to kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, businesses are taking notice and investing in UV disinfection systems to protect their staff and the public. In addition to typical UV light water, surface and air sterilization systems, UVC robots are in high demand.

Many hospitals across the country have invested in UV light robots to provide an added layer of protection against spreading disease. In spite of the most meticulous manual cleaning regimen, hospital staff can be pushed to the limit and operating with limited personal protective equipment. A UVC robot can be programmed to enter a hospital room after a manual cleaning process, and effectively kill bacteria and viruses often time missed even with the most diligent attempt at disinfection. UVC robots aid weary hospital staff without being on the payroll or needing a break, they simply make their way back to the charging station when required and deliver powerful germ killing UVC light to eliminate viruses and bacteria.

UVC Robots Proven Effective

Several studies have now been conducted which verify the effectiveness of UVC germicidal lamps to kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is a member of the beta coronavirus family similar to MERS and SARS.  Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) are in the same coronavirus family and have been known to be effectively eliminated by UVC radiation.  UVC light effectively inactivates these viruses as shown in a recent study by PURPLESUN which shows dosage and exposure time required to inactivate various types of coronaviruses as well as exposure time required to effectively kill drug-resistant bacteria.

Not only will UVC robots help hospitals to prevent the spread of COVID-19, they also continue to reduce risk of common health care associated infections (HAIs) from superbugs often found in hospitals. With UV light sterilization gaining in popularity, UVC robots are now seen outside of the medical field in places such as airports, train stations, shopping malls and public shelters.

What Viruses Does UV Light Kill?

October 15, 2020 by John Andros

Many harmful, infectious microorganisms are transmitted by various means such as droplets on surfaces, in the air and through human touch. Tuberculosis, measles, and influenza are all harmful, infectious organisms known to be transmitted between infected people to susceptible persons through shared airspace. Transmission may occur in areas of congregation within the room and also in hallways and through HVAC ductwork.

UV light emitted in the UVC range is known to kill tuberculosis, measles and influenza, and has been established in various medical journals for decades.

Ultraviolet Light Effectively Kills Many Microorganisms

Ultraviolet (UV) light emitted in the UVC wavelength predominately at 253.7 nm is proven to eliminate the threat from harmful viruses and bacteria by instantly altering cell DNA. UV light penetrates the DNA of these cells rendering them unable to replicate or cause infection, thus killing the threat from the virus.

UV light is proven to have a germicidal effect on the following viruses:

  • Measles

  • Smallpox

  • influenza virus

  • SARS (SAR-Cov)

  • MERS (MERS-Cov)

Microorganisms and bacteria which respond to UV light sterilization:

  • Vegetative bacteria

  • Staphylococcus aureus including various species:

    • Escherichia coli (E. Coli)

    • Pseudomonas aeruginosa

    • Serratia marcescens

    • Streptococcus pyogenes

Viruses and vegetative bacteria are in general most susceptible to ultraviolet sterilization, followed by additional microorganism groups such as:

  • Bacterial spores

  • Mycobacteria

  • Fungal spores

UVC germicidal lamps are effective in water, surface, and air sterilization, improving the health and wellness of people in many environments. UV Germicidal Disinfection Helps Restaurants Stay Safe

August 30, 2020 by John Andros in light bulb manufacturers

Restaurants have a responsibility to provide a safe, clean environment to customers as well as to serve healthy food, free from harmful bacteria and pathogens.  Foodborne illnesses cause an estimated 1,686 deaths every year in the U.S. with over 38 million reported cases of gastrointestinal illnesses.  UVC lamps provide valuable benefits to all food establishments including restaurants, food and beverage processing facilities.

UV disinfection of food products is called food irradiation and helps to prevent early spoilage and harmful bacteria and viruses from developing. Food irradiation is proven to eliminate Salmonella, E. Coli and other harmful microorganisms.  UV sterilization lamps used on food products is regulated by the FDA as an approved disinfection method for use on many food items including:

  • Fruits and vegetables

  • Meats and raw poultry

  • Many dairy products

  • Beverages

UV Lamps Beneficial in Many Areas of Restaurants

In addition to improving the safety of food items, UV germicidal lamps can also be used to disinfect and sterilize surfaces such as all contact surfaces in restaurants like food preparation countertops and serving stations. UV lamps can be used in refrigerators and walk-in freezers to prevent mold and mildew which can occur in damp spaces.

You might see UV lights over a food buffet, a deli, or over fruits and vegetables to prevent foodborne illnesses. UV disinfection in restaurants adds a layer of protection over regular cleaning methods and helps to keep patrons and staff safe from foodborne illnesses and contaminated surfaces.

UV disinfection of surfaces in restaurants provides many benefits such as:

Indoor Air Protection with UV Sterilization Lamps

August 19, 2020 by John Andros in light bulb manufacturers

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is an important consideration related to the comfort and health of building occupants.  IAQ is affected by the quality of air in and around buildings with airborne contaminants existing both inside and outside.  Controlling pollutants inside will help to reduce risk and improve the quality of indoor air for greater health and well-being.

Airborne contaminants that exist both inside and outside of buildings include:

  • Indoor pollutants:

    • Wood burning stoves

    • Tobacco smoke

    • Cooking

    • Ozone and chemical emissions from cleaning solvents, electronic equipment and human metabolic byproducts

  • Outdoor pollutants:

    • Agricultural and farming

    • Vehicle exhaust

    • Waste management facilities

    • Chemical storage areas

    • Processing equipment emissions

    • Combustion byproducts during manufacturing

UV Air Purifier in HVAC Systems

HVAC systems can be a great source of air pollution if dirt accumulates in the ventilation system.   Dirt combined with moisture and poor management of condensation can create serious air quality problems due to biological growth.  This typically occurs due to problems with the cooling coil condensation, humidifiers and other sources of moisture, poor maintenance of filters and inadequate particle filtration.

Air contaminants may be either biological, gaseous or particulate. Methods of improving air quality include eliminating the source of emissions, capturing emissions at the source with exhaust, dilution, increased ventilation, filtration and air sterilization. Of these methods, the only one that actually eliminates biological contaminants is air sterilization.  HEPA filters effectively filter particles as small as .3 microns, although they are ineffective against volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present on a molecular scale.

UV air sterilization is proven to eliminate VOCs and microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, mold and fungal spores and many other air contaminants. In-duct UV air purification systems installed near the cooling coils of HVAC units prevent microbial growth on cooling coils, thus preventing the spread of these contaminants throughout the home, office or building.

Does UV Light Kill Viruses?

June 17, 2020 by John Andros in light bulb manufacturers

Ultraviolet (UV) light is light emitted at wavelengths shorter than visible light in the range of 10 to 400 nanometer (nm) and is either in the UVA, UVB or UVC range.  UV light at precisely 254 nm is UVC light in the exact wavelength optimal for effective sterilization.  UVC wavelengths at 254 nm are proven to kill bacteria and viruses.

UVC germicidal lamps designed to emit light at 254 nm are used to destroy harmful pathogens with a high rate of efficacy, killing 99.99% of harmful microorganisms.  Germicidal UVC lamps are used in many surface, water and air purification systems worldwide.  UV sterilization is currently used in many environments such as medical facilities, research labs, hospitals, nursing homes and pharmaceuticals.

UV light is also used in a myriad of water sterilization applications including wastewater treatment, ballast water treatment systems, fish hatcheries, pools, spas, drinking water applications and more.  UV light kills bacteria that chlorine does not, is safe and effective.  UV light in air purification systems will eliminate the transmission of harmful pathogens through the air and ozone lamps will even remove foul odors from the air.

UV Lamps Protecting People from Coast to Coast

Medical facilities worldwide are increasing the use of UV light to sterilize hospital rooms as UV lamp manufacturers ramp up production.  UVC irradiation has been tested in New York on buses and subway cars.  UVC lamps used to sterilize buses in Shanghai are proving to be effective while reducing sterilization time from 40 minutes to about 5 minutes, with no labor expenses.

A UV sterilization system that can be utilized on aircraft and pushed through a plane like a refreshment cart is produced on the west coast in Los Angeles.  Airplane giant Boeing is working on developing a self-cleaning system for bathrooms on planes that kills germs with a burst of UV light.

UV light radiation technology is being utilized around the globe as Japan and the U.S. work to make places safer for residents.  Moving about public places, going to school or riding the subway may soon be safer with UV light technology despite the pandemic threat.

LightSources is a leading supplier of UV lamps and lamp components offering high quality germicidal UVC lamps, prototypes and custom designed products.  We support OEMs worldwide with quick turnaround time, research and development to provide first-to-market, innovative UV lamp solutions.  Contact us to learn more about our UVC germicidal lamp solutions.
