Germicidal UVC Lamps Protect Food with Irradiation

January 29, 2020 by John Andros

Food irradiation has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1963 as a safe method of eliminating foodborne pathogens and controlling spoilage. Food irradiation was first approved by the FDA to eliminate insects in flour and wheat.  The FDA and USDA have since approved UV germicidal food irradiation (UVGI) to treat vegetables, fruits, spices, red meats and raw poultry.

The FDA regulates food irradiation in the United States. UVGI is also endorsed by the American Medical Association and the World Health Organization.  Food irradiation provides many benefits in the food and beverage industry with germicidal UVC lamps eliminating harmful microorganisms on food products, surfaces and water/beverage systems.

What are the Benefits of Food Irradiation?

Food irradiation provides many benefits to the safety of foods such as preserving nutritional value, prolonging shelf life and sterilizing harmful pathogens to reduce health hazards.  Here are some of the most important benefits of UVGI:

  • Prevent foodborne illnesses – UVGI is proven to eliminate organisms that cause  Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella

  • Foodborne preservation – UV disinfection lamps destroy the organisms that cause decomposition and spoilage which extends the shelf life of many foods

  • Insect control – food irradiation safely destroys insects on foods such as tropical fruits which are imported into the U.S. without the use of pesticides that may damage certain fruits

  • Delay ripening and sprouting – UV food irradiation lamps delay the sprouting in potatoes, onions and garlic to increase food longevity

  • Sterilization – hospitals use sterilized foods for patients with severe immune deficiency illnesses such as AIDS or people who are receiving chemotherapy treatments

UV light offers these many benefits for food sterilization and is also used in the bottled water industry and food packaging processes.  UV lamps are used to treat surfaces such as conveyor belts, working surfaces and packaging containers. Germicidal UV lamps are highly effective at eliminating harmful pathogens on many food products although safe food handling procedures are still required to protect against foodborne illnesses.

Find Relief from Eczema with UV Light Therapy

January 27, 2020 by John Andros

It’s that time of year when the air gets dry from the heat running constantly and people with skin conditions like eczema often experience an increase in symptoms.  There are more than 30 million people in the U.S. suffer from some form of eczema, experiencing dry, itchy or scaly patches of skin. Various types of eczema include contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, nummular eczema, stasis dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis and dyshidrotic eczema.

The many bothersome symptoms of eczema may include:

  • Extremely itchy skin

  • Red, inflamed skin

  • Sensitive and dry skin

  • Scaly, rough patches

  • Oozing or crusting

  • Swelling in areas

  • Dark colored patches of skin

Itchy skin is the most common problem people with eczema experience and is found in all types of eczema.  Some people may even keep scratching their skin until it bleeds which can cause even more severe problems with potential infections.  Eczema may appear anywhere on the body, although is commonly found on the chin and cheeks of children and babies.

Some children with eczema may outgrow it as they grow older and some adults may develop eczema later in life.  There is no real known cause for this skin condition, although there are some proven remedies to alleviate and even eliminate symptoms.

Phototherapy Provides Proven Effective Eczema Treatment

According to the National Eczema Association, phototherapy delivers proven treatments with significant relief to many people suffering with eczema. Phototherapy refers to treatment with specialized UV light, designed to emit the right wavelengths to target eczema symptoms and causes. Phototherapy is used to treat many different types of eczema and is proven to provide significant relief from bothersome and painful symptoms.

Narrowband UVB light is the most common type of light therapy used to treat eczema which replicates the most effective healing wavelengths from the sun.  UVA light is also used with a medication called Psoralen in a treatment referred to as PUVA and is proven to be effective at treating eczema. Light therapy should be prescribed by a physician and the right types of phototherapy lamps must be used to achieve desired results.  The wrong type of lamp, in fact, could make symptoms worse.

Light therapy is proven to alleviate symptoms of inflamed skin and itchiness while improving bacteria fighting symptoms and increasing vitamin D.  Phototherapy is proven to help at least 70% of people and can sometimes put eczema into a state of remittance long after therapy ends.

Industrial UV Air Purification Is Good for Business

January 22, 2020 by John Andros

Commercial air quality is important as the air that we breathe day in and day out has a significant effect on our health. Maintaining a healthy workforce is critical for businesses to thrive, to meet production without unexpected illnesses and lost work time.  Businesses of all types including public commercial properties and manufacturing facilities should strive to provide clean indoor air free of particle and chemical pollutants.

The primary cause of the majority of colds and flues are germs, bacteria, viruses, mold, mildew and other microorganisms.  These disease causing germs enter the air from many different sources such as leftover food, mold, mildew and when someone coughs or sneezes. Regular hand washing and cleaning commercial spaces are important, healthy practices although it is impossible to provide a commercial environment completely free of germs. Antibacterial soap and germicidal cleaning products are a great way to keep your hands and surfaces clean although do nothing to ward off airborne illnesses.

Many traditional industrial air purification systems remove airborne pollutants although do not eliminate viruses, bacteria, mold, mildew and other disease causing germs. Even some of the best industrial air cleaners are powerless against these things unless they utilize UVC germicidal lamps.  Traditional air purification systems in commercial applications use a filtration method to remove particle pollutants, although these systems allow microorganisms to easily pass through.

UV Air Sanitizers Remove Germs Filtration Methods Do Not

The UV radiation emitted in UV air sanitizers is the only effective way to remove mold, mildew, viruses, bacteria and disease causing microbes. Industrial grade UV air purification systems are proven to be highly effective. UVC germicidal lamps can be installed in HVAC systems as an effective method to purify the air in large spaces.  UV HVAC systems improve air quality for a healthy workforce while meeting industrial air quality requirements.

UVC Lamps for Air Purification

UVC germicidal lamps used in air purification systems emit a specific wavelength at 254 nanometer (nm) to instantly alter the DNA of germs and harmful microorganisms. UV radiation penetrates the cells to render them unable to replicate thus eliminating any disease causing threat.  It is important to use high-quality UVC germicidal lamps to achieve maximum germicidal effectiveness and air quality.

The LightSources Group is a leading global supplier of high-quality UVC germicidal lamps used in air purification systems, as well as water and surface sterilization applications worldwide.  We offer a vast product line to meet any germicidal requirement and offer custom designed, high-tech UV germicidal solutions.

Where Can I Find High Quality Ozone Lamps?

December 22, 2019 by John Andros

Ozone occurs naturally from ultraviolet light although the ozone layer filters most of the UV light emitted by the sun. Ultraviolet (UV) light refers to wavelengths emitted at frequencies higher than visible light. Ultraviolet, or beyond violet, refers to light frequencies in the range of 100 to 315 nm, whereas visible light is in the range of 400 to 700 nm.

UVC germicidal lamps deliver powerful UV radiation at an effective 254 nm, proven to sterilize and disinfect against many germs and viruses. When UV light is emitted in shorter wavelengths in the range between 160 to 240 nm, ozone will be produced. Photolysis of oxygen, O2, is the process which disrupts the oxygen molecule, creating valent oxygen atoms which attach to individual oxygen molecules, creating ozone, O3.

Quartz glass ozone lamps emit UV rays in the range of 185 nm to effectively decompress the oxygen in the air and create ozone. Ozone disinfectant lamps are used worldwide in a number of water and air sterilization systems, eliminating harmful germs and foul odors. UVC ozone lamps improve air quality by eliminating harmful contaminants, microorganisms, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including ammonia, sulfides and mercaptans.

High-Quality Quartz Glass Ozone Lamps

Light Therapy for Mood and Sleep Disorders

December 18, 2019 by John Andros

Light therapy, also called phototherapy, is a way to treat various mood disorders and depression, specifically seasonal affective disorder (SAD). SAD commonly occurs to people that live in the northern hemisphere during fall and winter months when sunlight is significantly reduced. People that use light therapy to ease symptoms of SAD sit next to a bright light that mimics natural outdoor sunlight.

According to the Mayo Clinic, light therapy can be quite successful in treating a number of mood and sleep disorders including:

Seasonal Affective Disorder, SAD

Nonseasonal types of depression

Sleep disorders

Dementia

Adjustment to night work schedules

Phototherapy is thought to successfully treat these disorders by affecting chemicals in the brain which are linked to mood and sleep. Light therapy is also used to treat many different skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis although those UV phototherapy lamps are different from light therapy lamps for SAD.

Light therapy lamps for mood and depression should filter out UV wavelengths which can damage your skin and eyes. Some people may think that using a tanning bed is good enough to treat seasonal and nonseasonal depression, although this is a myth. Tanning beds are not an alternative to phototherapy lamps and will increase your chances of developing skin cancer.

Reasons You May Want to Try Phototherapy

Phototherapy can provide many benefits to improve symptoms of SAD, depression and sleep problems. It is a good idea to talk with your doctor about light therapy and the reasons why you’d like to try it. Be sure to purchase a quality phototherapy lamp designed to treat the symptoms you desire and be aware of any risks involved.

You may want to try light therapy for many reasons such as:

Your doctor recommends light therapy for seasonal depression

Your doctor recommends combining light therapy with antidepressants

You need to avoid taking antidepressants During pregnancy or breast-feeding

Light therapy is safe with few side effects

Phototherapy can provide many benefits when used in combination with antidepressants and or psychological counseling. If you experience side effects they usually do not last long and may include mild symptoms such as:

Headache

Eyestrain

Agitation or irritability

Nausea

Manic or euphoric state associated with bipolar disorder

Talk with your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms or have concerns about light therapy affecting your thoughts or mood such as experiencing mania or hyperactivity. It is important to talk with your doctor about using light therapy for mood and sleep disorders, especially if you have any conditions that make your skin or eyes sensitive to light. Some anti-inflammatory medications and antibiotics can increase sensitivity to sunlight along with some herbal supplements like St. John’s Wort.

UV germicidal lamps which are designed to emit ozone provide effective and cost-efficient sterilization and deodorization. Ozone producing lamps are proven to meet strict air quality regulations in many industrial applications including removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odor causing contaminants. UV germicidal lamps are used in many industrial applications worldwide, commercial properties and residences to remove foul odor from the air.

Germicidal lamps are engineered to emit various effective wavelengths such as 254 nm which instantly eliminates bacteria and viruses by penetrating the DNA of cells and rendering them useless and unable to replicate. Germicidal lamps designed to emit 185 nm produce ozone which safely removes odor causing contaminants such as sulfides, mercaptans and ammonia. Ozone breaks these harmful organisms into less complex molecules through a process called oxidation.

UV air sterilization and oxidation systems breakdown water vapor molecules and ambient oxygen into hydroxyl free radicals and short-lived oxygen. Hydroxyl and oxygen provide instant breakdown of gases with very little byproducts.

How Do Ultraviolet Lamps Kill Bacteria?

November 18, 2019 by John Andros

Ultraviolet (UV) lamps harness the power of ultraviolet radiation which is a proven disinfectant and deodorizer. Ultraviolet, or beyond violet, is electromagnetic energy which is actually invisible to the human eye.  UV light is measured in wavelengths, referred to as nanometers (nm),  and falls into three basic categories of UVA, UVB and UVC light.

UVC radiation when emitted at precisely 254 nm is proven to be highly effective at eliminating bacteria, viruses, mold spores, fungi, mildew, harmful microorganisms and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). UVC germicidal lamps are proven to instantly eradicate these harmful contaminants in many surface, water and air purification systems.

When UVC wavelengths emitted at 254 nm are exposed to these harmful microorganisms, the UV radiation instantly penetrates the DNA of these living cells and alters the DNA so they cannot replicate. Harmful microorganisms that cannot replicate are considered to be harmless. UV radiation emitted at 185 nm produces ozone which is proven to oxidize, sanitize and deodorize foul odors.

LightSources Offers UVC Germicidal Lamp Solutions

The LightSources Group is recognized worldwide as an authority on UV lamp design and engineering for a multitude of industries including UVC germicidal applications. UVC germicidal lamps are typically low pressure, Mercury lamps which are engineered to emit precisely 254 nm of UVC radiation while producing a Mercury arc. These powerful germicidal lamps contain a blend of gases such as Neon and Argon or custom blends.

The LightSources Group is experienced in designing custom phosphor blends to reach the desired wavelength emission. Germicidal lamp bodies are typically manufactured in fused quartz designed to emit 185 nm and 254 nm, a quartz and titanium blend which blocks out 185 nm to prevent ozone production or a soft glass lamp body.

LightSources also offers surface sterilization lamps which emit 222 nm and are Mercury free. This UVC germicidal lamp warm-up instantly with 100% effectiveness without requiring the typical warm-up time of other UVC germicidal lamps.  The Excimer series is highly effective for surface sterilization and can be found in many commercial, industrial and residential applications.

The LightSources Group delivers high-tech lamp solutions with cutting-edge, UV technology. We are dedicated to delivering long-lasting high quality and cost-efficient OEM oriented solutions.
