US Coast Guard Approved Ballast Water Treatment System

May 15, 2019 by John Andros

According to the Ballast Water Treatment Convention all ships are prohibited from discharging untreated ballast water into US waters.  The International Maritime Organization (IMO) enforces the Convention through the Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) with all ships required to have approved ballast water treatment systems on board based on an international implementation schedule. The schedule depends on the construction date of the vessel and the ballast water capacity.

Untreated ballast water is recognized as one of the greatest threats to the world’s oceans when ships pick up water in one port and drop that same ballast water in foreign ports.  The contaminated ballast water contains marine organisms such as mussels or jellyfish which are known to take over when released into foreign waters without their natural predators. This has been known to threaten the functionality of dams, power plants and has completely destroyed ecosystems and fishing industries.

UV Ballast Water Treatment Systems Meet USCG Approval

UV radiation is proven in water treatment systems to successfully eliminate viruses, bacteria and harmful contaminants. UVC germicidal lamps emit UVC radiation at the optimum wavelength to instantly penetrate the cells of these living viruses and render them unable to replicate which completely eliminates any risk of infestation. UV radiation is a very simple and safe method of effective water sterilization.

The LightSources Group offers a wide selection of UVC germicidal lamps proven in water purification and sterilization applications such as:

Do UVC Lamps Really Work to Kill Bacteria?

April 25, 2019 by John Andros

UVC lamps are proven to be highly effective at killing bacteria and harmful contaminants in many water, surface and air sterilization systems. Ultraviolet (UV) light is in the electromagnetic spectrum which is invisible to the human eye. UV light is divided into UVA, UVB and UVC wavelengths, measured in nanometers (nm).  UVC radiation emitted at the wavelength of 254 nm is proven to instantly eradicate viruses, bacteria, fungi, mold spores, mildew and harmful microorganisms naked to the human eye.

UVC radiation penetrates the DNA of these living cells and renders them unable to replicate which instantly makes them harmless.  UVC lamps which are specially designed to emit UV radiation precisely at 254 nm effectively eliminate these harmful threats in water, air and on surfaces instantly upon exposure.  UVC ozone lamps emit wavelengths at 185 nm to produce ozone which is a proven oxidizer, sanitizer and deodorizer to eliminate foul odors from the air.

How Do UVC Lamps Work?

UVC germicidal lamps are commonly low-pressure Mercury lamps designed to emit the optimum UV radiation and wavelength for the germicidal application. The low-pressure lamps produce a Mercury arc and are engineered to radiate exactly 254 nm of UVC radiation.  UVC germicidal lamps contain a blend of Argon and Neon gases designed for the application.

UVC lamps operate with a discharge device comparable to fluorescent lamps, with the lamp body commonly constructed of:

  • VH Glass – pure fused quartz that transmits both 185nm and 254nm

  • L Glass – this is soft glass and designed to emit wavelengths at 254nm

  • L Glass – quartz and Titanium which blocks out 185nm

UVC germicidal lamps are designed without the phosphor coating on the inside of the glass lamp to allow for the maximum amount of UV radiation to pass through the lamp. UVC lamps are designed with lamp ballasts which determine the amount of voltage required based on the rare gases used the lamp ballasts are a critical component of UVC lamp construction which deliver the optimum voltage.

The LightSources Group is recognized worldwide for delivering high-tech lamp solutions with cutting-edge, UV technology. We are committed to delivering high quality, high performance, long-lasting and cost-efficient OEM oriented solutions. Does UV Light Help Eczema?

April 19, 2019 by John Andros

Eczema is an irritating skin condition which causes dry, itchy patches of skin as the most common symptom in all types of eczema. Some people have moderate to severe cases with swelling and rough scaly patches of skin which can be made worse by scratching. Topical treatments provide relief to some people suffering with eczema although it may not fully ward off all of the irritating symptoms.

UV light is proven to be an effective treatment that helps many people suffering with eczema. Light therapy, also known as phototherapy, should be administered by a physician with the proper type of phototherapy lamp.  The narrow band UVB wavelengths is the most common type of UV light used to treat eczema, which replicates UVB rays in natural sunlight.

People that notice relief from eczema in the summertime are more likely to notice benefit from phototherapy. UVA light is also used with a medication called psoralen in a treatment called PUVA, which was also be administered under a doctor’s care. Phototherapy has been proven to provide relief of many symptoms for eczema such as:

  • Reducing inflammation

  • Reducing itchy skin

  • Improving bacteria fighting systems

  • Increasing vitamin D

Phototherapy is proven to help about 70% of the people suffering with eczema and is used on localized locations such as the feet and hands or all over the body.  It is important to be consistent with UV light treatment, as most people do not realize an improvement for one to two months. Many people find however that the benefits of phototherapy put their eczema in a quiet state of remittance which lasts long after UV phototherapy ends.

UVC Germicidal Lamps for Ballast Water Treatment Systems

March 31, 2019 by John Andros in light bulb manufacturers

UVC germicidal lamps are proven to be highly effective at sterilizing water, air and surfaces. The recent Ballast Water Treatment Convention, BWTC, requires all shipping companies to maintain an effective ballast water treatment system on board their vessel. When ships pick up ballast water in one port and release it in a foreign port, marine organisms are known to wreak havoc when invading foreign waters.

Marine organisms such as jellyfish and mussels are known to multiply to uncontrollable levels, ruining shipping industries and threatening human safety. Many of these marine organisms are controlled in their natural environment but become dangerous when upsetting the natural ecosystem. Contaminated ballast water is recognized as one of the top five threats to the sustainability of our world’s oceans.

Ultraviolet (UV) technology is proven to sterilize water and eliminate harmful marine organisms such as jellyfish, mussels, viruses, bacteria and microorganisms naked to the human eye. UVC radiation emitted at 254 nanometer (nm) is proven effective at altering the DNA of these living organisms and rendering them harmless. UV Phototherapy Lamps for Effective Psoriasis Treatment

March 30, 2019 by John Andros in light bulb manufacturers

Phototherapy, commonly referred to as light therapy, refers to the use of light to produce medically beneficial treatment to a number of health conditions. Ultraviolet (UV) light is proven to help patients with many ailments affecting the skin such as psoriasis, eczema, acne, jaundice and vitiligo as well as mood disorders such as depression and seasonal affective disorder. It is important to use the right type of UV phototherapy lamp for your condition as the wrong type of lamp could either not work at all or make symptoms worse.

Be sure to follow physician’s instructions and obtain UV phototherapy lamps from a reputable phototherapy lamp supplier with knowledge of UV radiation.

UV Phototherapy Proven to Improve Many Skin Conditions

UV phototherapy lamps are endorsed by the National Psoriasis Foundation to effectively treat psoriasis under a physician’s care. It is important to use the right type of lamp designed with the proper wavelength emission. Tanning beds do not deliver the same wavelength of UV light and could cause further damage to skin.

UV light in the UVB range is proven to improve symptoms of psoriasis by slowing down new skin cell production and allowing skin cells to heal. Patients can use special UV phototherapy lamps at home which deliver the right emission of UVB rays as prescribed by their physician. Narrow band UVB and UVA light therapy lamps may be used in combination with medication to provide relief to patients who may experience improvement in a few weeks to a few months.

UVC Germicidal Lamp Ballasts Make the Difference

March 28, 2019 by John Andros in light bulb manufacturers

Selecting the right type of lamp ballasts for UVC germicidal lamps is extremely important in determining lamp performance. Germicidal lamps are active elements in electrical circuits as opposed to passive elements such as inductors, capacitors and resistors. Germicidal lamps, in contrast are active elements because they generate harmonic and transient voltage and current.

Germicidal lamps exhibit a unique characteristic with the voltage decreasing when the current increases. This is referred to as negative AC resistance which makes gas discharge devices inherently unstable. The current would increase without limit once turned on without circuit elements maintaining and restoring operation. These circuit elements are typically called ballasts, which are critical components on UVC germicidal lamps.

LightSources and LightTech Offer High Quality and Custom Ballasts

LightSources in the United States and LightTech in Europe are recognized global leaders in the lamp and lighting industry. The LightSources Group offers a true systems approach with electronic ballasts that match your lamps, customized to your specifications. How Does a UVC Germicidal Lamps Work?

March 27, 2019 by John Andros in light bulb manufacturers

A UVC germicidal lamp is simply a device which converts electricity into ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Microorganisms are sensitive to ultraviolet radiation emitted at 260 nanometers (nm), which instantly alters the DNA of harmful bacteria and viruses rendering them unable to replicate and harmless. Low-pressure Mercury rare gas UVC lamps convert up to 40% of electrical power into UVC radiation at 254 nm.

This conversion of electricity is up to 40%, with the quality of the UVC lamp components and construction determining the effectiveness of this conversion of electricity. Low-pressure, mercury rare gas UVC germicidal lamps are very similar to fluorescent lamps. They are similar in construction and operation although UVC germicidal lamps do not have a phosphor coating on the inner lamp wall. This is to allow the most effective wavelength of UVC radiation to flow through the lamp.

UVC Germicidal Lamp Body

The UVC germicidal lamp body may be constructed with pure fused quartz, quartz with titanium, or a soft glass design. Pure fused quartz lamp bodies will transmit both 185 nm and 254 nm of UV radiation with VH glass. A lamp body designed with quartz and titanium blocks out most of the 185 nm radiation in a L glass design. Another L glass design is soft glass also formulated to transmit an effective 254 nm of UVC radiation.

There are electrodes at each end of the lamp which connect the gas discharge device to the external current source. Each electrode serves alternately as either cathode or anode when the lamp is operated on alternating current (AC) as is the typical case. The germicidal lamp body may be filled with a mix of rare gasses including Argon and Neon, or with pure Argon gas depending on the application. A small amount of mercury is required to produce UV radiation.

To learn more about the most effective UVC germicidal lamps, contact the leading global supplier of UV lamps and lighting solutions, the LightSources Group. UV Light Instantly Cures Polymers

February 28, 2019 by John Andros in light bulb manufacturers

Ultraviolet (UV) light is utilized in many industrial and commercial applications to instantly cure, harden and strengthen polymers quickly and effectively. UV light instantly causes a photochemical reaction when exposed to polymers such as epoxies, lacquers, glues, polyurethane and various polymers. UV curing offers many benefits over other drying methods such as air drying or the use of chemicals.

Benefits of UV Curing

Improved Quality

UV curing offers many benefits due to the instant drying time which does not allow for evaporation as can occur with air drying. The instant curing provides a more consistent surface with no chance of dust or particles drying in the coating and is smooth compared to air dried surfaces, which produces a higher quality of product.

Increased Production

With instant curing, cycle times are increased and productivity is maximized for increased production. UV curing is instant, quicker than air drying or the use of chemicals, which pose additional challenges for companies.

Safe for Employees

UV curing is completely safe, with no need to purchase, store or dispose of harmful chemicals. Parts can pass under UV light while on a conveyor or other automated system without the need for employees to apply chemicals which may be hazardous to health.

All of these benefits equate to increased profitability with a higher level of quality product produced in quicker cycles. Improved quality results in increased customer satisfaction with new and repeat business opportunities.

Effectively Treat Psoriasis with UV Phototherapy Lamps

February 26, 2019 by John Andros in light bulb manufacturers

Psoriasis is a troubling skin condition where people suffer from mild, moderate to severe symptoms which include patches if itchy, red skin and dry, hardened lesions raised on the skin. Many people try conventional treatments which include medication and topical ointments that provide relief to some patients with mild to moderate symptoms but may not be as effective for the more severe cases.

UV light phototherapy is proven to be highly effective at treating and controlling symptoms of psoriasis, providing some relief to people suffering with this troubling skin condition. Phototherapy lamps deliver Ultraviolet (UV) radiation at the optimum wavelength determined for therapy in both UVA and UVB wavelengths.

UV lamp phototherapy should be prescribed only by a physician with the right type of light therapy lamp. Not all UV lamps are created equal and only a UV light therapy lamp designed to treat psoriasis will be effective. Other types of lamps especially tanning beds may actually worsen symptoms.

UV Light Therapy Lamp for Psoriasis

UV light therapy lamps which effectively treat psoriasis may include both broad band and narrow band UV wavelengths. The UVB narrow band lamps deliver a smaller range of UV exposure with either type of lamp imitating the sun’s natural healing efforts. Both UVA and UVB technology may be combined for effective treatment, depending on your condition and your doctor’s orders.

When UVA light therapy lamps are used, a medication called psoralen is also used to enhance the effectiveness of the UVA exposure, which is why this treatment is commonly referred to as PUVA. This is proven to be effective at slowing down the growth of excessive skin cells to provide relief from the raised, scaly patches of skin. In any light therapy treatment, consistency is key to receiving the desired results. Some patients see relief in as little as a few weeks, while some others may take months to notice improvement.

UV therapy is also successful by killing bacteria in the skin which helps to clear skin for many patients. Phototherapy is proven to be effective at treating acne for this reason, and many other skin conditions including vitiligo and eczema. Light therapy is also proven treatment for different types of depression, not only seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

The LightSources Group is comprised of the leading high-tech lamp designers available today offering innovative lighting solutions with high performance UV lamp products. We provide customized solutions with ongoing customer support. Contact us today to speak with an engineer about our full line of phototherapy lamps and UV germicidal solutions.

Advancements in ultraviolet (UV) technology provide powerful sterilization to air, surface and water treatment applications. UV radiation is proven to effectively eliminate viruses, bacteria, fungi and microorganisms from water with safe treatment methods. UV water sterilization is used in a number of water treatment processes such as:

  • Water reclamation

  • Aquaculture

  • Water treatment plants

  • Ballast water in ships

  • Municipalities water treatment

  • Drinking water

  • Food and beverage

UV radiation is used to eliminate harmful contaminants in these applications and many others.

UV Technology for Water Reclamation

Waste water treatment plants and water reclamation facilities benefit from UV radiation from UV germicidal lamps. UV germicidal lamps are used to sterilize water to kill germs and prevent illness.

Marine Hatcheries and Aquaculture

Marine hatcheries and fish farms utilize the power of UV water sterilization to keep their fish and marine life healthy and free from viruses. Water preserves and aquariums realize many benefits from UV germicidal lamps which eliminate harmful marine microorganisms.

UV Lamps Provide Instant Polymer Curing

February 24, 2019 by John Andros in light bulb manufacturers

Ultraviolet (UV) lamps are proven highly effective at instantly curing a wide variety of polymers in a multitude of industrial applications. Polymers which respond to UV curing lamps include various inks, lacquers, varnishes, epoxies, polyurethane, silicone and coatings. These coatings are applied to various parts and products such as in printing applications and manufacturing processes which include printing on parts or sealing an outer coating on various parts and products.

The UV lamp is a catalyst for a photochemical reaction which occurs instantly within seconds of exposure. The UV radiation causes the polymer to instantly seal and bond with products, creating a strengthened and more durable product.  UV curing provides many advantages over other methods of curing polymers such as air drying or the use of chemicals. Using chemicals creates a potential hazard and added expenses with purchasing, storing and disposing of the chemical in addition to potential health risks to employees.

Air drying is another simple method of applying outer coatings although does not seal in the polymer as with the use of UV technology. Air drying creates an uneven surface due to evaporation and leaves the outer coating vulnerable without the added strength and durability provided with UV curing. UV curing lamps deliver fast and consistent methods of bonding and during outer coatings for strength and durability without contamination or evaporation.
